Ariari River, a source of inspiration and a place to discover

Ariari River: An active, vigorous and fertile nature

The Ariari River together with the Guayabero River give rise to the Guaviare River. Part of the rivers that make up the Colombian Meta. With rapid waters that are sought after by rafting enthusiasts.

The Ariari River has its source in the so-called Sumapaz Páramo, which is located at the top of Las Oseras. From there it begins its descent, forming a large canyon.

It runs until it reaches its outlet located in the Cordillera, near the municipalities named El Dorado and also Cubarral, which are part of the Ariari River in the Colombian Department of Meta.

From there it continues and begins to erode, as it drags materials along, reaching the heights of the municipality called Fuente de Oro.

After reaching the municipality called Puerto Lleras, its navigability is greatly transformed. Boats with deep drafts that carry loads of 25 to 30 tons can sail along its waters. The Vichada River is also navigable.

Places where the Ariari River passes

The waters of the Ariari River in Colombia are yellow in winter, which turn into very clear waters when summer arrives.

When its journey begins, it is the collector of 10% of the waters that come to irrigate the Department of Meta, which come down from the slopes of the Eastern Mountain Range, in addition to the Serranía de la Macarena.

It proceeds to bathe with its waters as it flows through the upper part of its basin the municipalities of Cubarral and El Castillo. As it flows through the middle part of its basin, it is also called the Ariari plain, and bathes the municipalities of Granada, Fuente de Oro and Lejanías. And upon reaching the lower part of the Ariari River, it proceeds to flow its waters through the municipalities of Puerto Lleras, Puerto Rico and Puerto Concordia. It continues its flow until it reaches where it delivers its waters to the Guayabero River and together gives birth to the Guaviare River.

The direction of the Ariari River in Colombia is northeast-southeast, creating a so-called alluvial plain, with the typical features of this type of landform.
